"Trav loaned me Newt Gingrich's alternative tome in which Lee wins at Gettysburg."

Hey that sounds cool, do you need super-detailed knowledge of the actual battle to enjoy that book? I've been interested in his 1945 novel, sounds fascinating but haven't picked it up yet - izzit any good?

Here's an alternate history I've tried to ponder. American settlers deal with the Indians in a more ethical manner, honoring the Northwest Ordinance and basically stopping at the Mississippi river. The Indians control the West, Mexico controls Texas and California. Fast forward several hundred years and America is a backward agricultural nation, unable to help fight the Nazis. The ethical dilemma - was the genocide of native Americans necessary to build a nation strong enough to fight genocide in Europe?

And inversely, what if Lee had accepted Lincoln's offer to command Union forces? The war would have been over in a matter of months probably rather than years. If Lee had accepted Lincoln's offer, his popularity in the south would have had a demoralizing effect on the Confederacy. Instead he lent his name and services to the rebellion which strengthened their cause.

Do any of you remember when General Lee was finally restored to US citizenship? I remember it well, it was in 1976. He had to stand in the corner a long time for being bad...

    Oh my bad...

I bet that's why "The Car" went on such a rampage running over people? They used a modified black Lincoln in that movie. (1977)
